The nerve that carries information to the muscles of the face (the facial nerve) is the most commonly paralyzed nerve in the human body. Impairment of this nerve can have a significant effect on the cosmetic, functional, social, and psychological aspects of one’s life. I am the Co-Director of the University of Utah’s Center for Facial Nerve Disorders. At the University, we have assembled a team of experts from a variety of fields whose sole mission is to improve the quality of life of patients with facial nerve disorders through physical rehabilitation, counseling and corrective procedures. I perform in-office and surgical procedures to treat common facial nerve problems such as trouble with closure of the eye, sagging of the skin of the upper eyelid and eyebrow area, nasal blockage that often affects the paralyzed side of the nose, sagging of the skin of the cheek, trouble pronouncing words due to decreased movement of the lips, and through forming normal facial expressions. INFORMATION FOR TRAVELING PATIENTS
Many patients come from out of town in search of privacy for their surgery. They want some time away from friends and co-workers during the early healing period. Because Utah is a popular vacation destination, telling people that you're coming here provides a reasonable explanation for your time away. Depending on which procedure you have performed, when you return, they may attribute your refreshed appearance to your vacation rather than realizing you've had cosmetic surgery.
