What Does Neck & Chin Refinement Involve?

Neck and chin surgery can usually be performed through a very small incision (about one inch) placed on the underside of the chin where most people have a natural crease in the skin. This incision heals quickly, leaving an almost imperceptible scar (click for image). Through this incision, I can perform liposuction of the “wattle” area as well as remove fatty jowls that tend to develop at the lower corners of the mouth. Sometimes I will also place a very small incision just behind the earlobe to perform liposuction that will further enhance the jaw line.

About half of the patients I see who are seeking neck and chin cosmetic surgery have weak chins. Surprisingly, patients themselves are not aware of this. If you fall into this category, I can place a chin implant through the same small incision. This implant is secured on top of the front of the jaw bone and helps to give a stronger, more refined look to the face. A large variety of implants are available so they can be individualized to your exact anatomy.

How Much Does Neck & Chin Refinement Cost?

To fully understand the costs of cosmetic surgery, you must understand the guiding principles of my medical practice: Safety, Quality and a Respect for Cost. I have not designed the surgical experience to be lowest bid; rather, I want you to have an exceptionally high-quality medical experience. If this interests you, please read on.

There are three main components that contribute to your final cosmetic surgery fee. The first component is the surgeon's fee. As this is a medical experience, your final surgeon's fee can only determined after a full consultation with me. I will perform a complete history and physical exam and we will carefully discuss your concerns. Computerized imaging is often used to help better plan your surgery. As a reference point, a recent survey of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery showed the average fee of neck lift surgery to be $6894. Chin augmentation averages $2297, and the cost for neck liposuction is $2247.

The second cost component is the facility in which your operation is performed. I operate only in a state of the art surgical enter - not in a in-office surgical room. This surgical center is JCAHO certified, which means it has passed the highest level of federal inspection. Cosmetic surgery is real surgery, and I strongly believe that having it performed in a JCAHO certified center is in your best medical interest. The average surgical center fee for this operation is $850.

The final cost component is the anesthesia fee. The training background of the person ultimately responsible for your sedation should be carefully considered. Nurse anesthetists are members of the surgical team; however, in every cosmetic operation I perform, an anesthesiologist who has completed medical school, residency, and board certification is responsible for your sedation. This is the level of care I would insist on for my own family members. Anesthesia fees for this operation average $500.

After your consultation you will leave the office with an easy to understand written quote in which we will list the cost of these three components for your individualized surgical plan. Keep in mind that the facility and anesthesia fees are time-based and so may be increased, or decreased, based on the actual final length of your surgery.

How Long Is The Recovery Period?

One week is usually ample time for the majority of the recovery. Stitches are removed one week after the operation. You will be given a supportive elastic strap to wear 24 hours a day for the first week following surgery. After the first week, I recommend that you wear the supportive dressing at home and at nights for the following two to three weeks.

When Can I Return To School Or Work?

Most patients are best served by taking one week off to recover and to wait for removal of the elastic strap.

How Will I look After Neck & Chin Refinement?

During your consultation, you can review before and after photos of patients who have undergone similar surgery. Also, computer morphing software can be used during the consultation to show you what is realistically achievable from surgery.

What Are The Common Risks?

Every type of surgery has risks. It’s my ethical responsibility to educate you on these risks so you can make the best possible decision for yourself while weighing these risks against the benefits of surgery. My training helps me to minimize these risks to the best of my ability, but I cannot eliminate them entirely.

Common risks include numbness of chin, red or visible scar, shifting of the implant, and infection of the implant.

The risks above are the most common ones that I think you should be aware of, but they are not a complete list of all possible risks. When I see you in consultation and we begin to formulate your surgical treatment plan, I’ll review with you not only these common risks but also the less likely complications that may occur.

Experience Matters...

Experience matters when choosing a surgeon to help you determine the best procedure for improving your neck and chin. These are the facial areas where surgeons have to be most knowledgeable about the anatomy (such as bones, nerves, and muscles of the jaw and neck area) and what can be realistically achieved. Dr. Mobley is double board-certified both as a head and neck surgeon (ABOto) and as a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon (ABFPRS). He has the experience to help you better understand your anatomy and to work with you to develop the best surgical plan.

Salt Lake City, Utah Neck Liposuction and Chin Augmentation

As we age, certain changes occur in the jaw and neck area. You may be bothered by a loss of definition of the jaw-line, a weak chin, or a wattle in the neck area. Often, liposuction of the neck and jowl area is all that is needed. For some patients, a chin implant can add pleasing strength to the jaw-line. If you have excess "turkey gobbler" skin, a neck lift alone is all that may be required. Dr. Mobley will help you determine which procedure is best for you. Recovery averages 10-14 days for most patients.
