What Is Involved In Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Light and laser skin treatments use high energy lasers to remove unwanted spots, deeper wrinkles, and smooth the texture of the skin.

How Much Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Cost?

To fully understand the costs of cosmetic surgery, you must understand the guiding principles of my medical practice: Safety, Quality and a Respect for Cost. I have not designed the surgical experience to be lowest bid; rather, I want you to have an exceptionally high-quality medical experience. If this interests you, please read on.

There are three main components that contribute to your final cosmetic surgery fee. The first component is the surgeon's fee. As this is a medical experience, your final surgeon's fee can only be determined after a full consultation with me. I will perform a complete history and physical exam and we will carefully discuss your concerns.

As a reference point, a recent survey of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery showed the average professional fee of laser resurfacing to be $3515 . Dr. Mobley's professional fee tends to be between $1875 and $3525 based on treating select portions of the face (i.e., just around the eyes) or the entire face. The average facility and anesthesia fees range from $1980 to $2195.

The second cost component is the facility in which your operation is performed. I operate only in a state of the art surgical enter - not in an in-office surgical room. This surgical center is JCAHO certified, which means it has passed the highest level of federal inspection. Cosmetic surgery is real surgery, and I strongly believe that having it performed in a JCAHO certified center is in your best medical interest. The average surgical center fee for this operation is $1400 . That includes charges related to the use of the laser itself. We have also seen that many patients combine laser resurfacing with other procedures which can help to relatively lower this facility fee.

The final cost component is the anesthesia fee. The training background of the person ultimately responsible for your sedation should be carefully considered. Nurse anesthetists are members of the surgical team; however, in every cosmetic operation I perform, an anesthesiologist who has completed medical school, residency, and board certification is responsible for your sedation. This is the level of care I would insist on for my own family members. Anesthesia fees for this operation average $380 .

After your consultation you will leave the office with an easy to understand written quote in which we will list the cost of these three components for your individualized surgical plan. Keep in mind that the facility and anesthesia fees are time-based and so may be increased, or decreased, based on the actual final length of your surgery.

How Long is The Recovery Period?

Laser resurfacing can provide some of the most dramatic improvements in the treatment of age and sun-damaged skin. These treatments performed by Dr. Mobley are not some of the “so-called” no-down-time treatments and patients should be prepared for about 10-14 days of recovery. During this time period patients are given specific hands-on instruction on how to properly care for their resurfaced skin.

After this initial recovery, your skin will be a light pink hue for several more weeks as your skin fades back to its natural color. Dr. Mobley and his staff can provide you with high-quality medical grade cosmetics that will help cover this pink skin which allows our patients to get back into a normal routine more rapidly. When Can I Return To Work Or School?

Based on your individual recovery, you should be ready to go back to work approximately 10 to 14 days after your resurfacing.

Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Painful?

Local anesthesia combined with sedation is commonly used for the procedure, to provide maximum comfort during your procedure. Dr. Mobley will also frequently use general anesthesia for more extensive procedures. Laser resurfacing is not a painful procedure though some patients may experience some amount of discomfort afterward.

What Are The Risks Of Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Abnormal color changes, burns or injuries from the laser heat, cold sores, infection, and scarring are some of the complications that can occur with laser resurfacing.

The risks above are the most common ones that I think you should be aware of, but they are not a complete list of all possible risks. When I see you in consultation and we begin to formulate your surgical treatment plan, I'll review with you not only these common risks but also the less likely complications that may occur.

Experience Matters...

CO2 laser resurfacing is the most effective way to treat excessive facial wrinkles. However, this procedure is very aggressive, so it requires a surgeon of skill and experience to achieve the best results. Dr. Mobley performs laser resurfacing frequently, often in combination with face lift or eyelid tuck to achieve the optimal aesthetic result. In many cases, he recommends a targeted approach to address only the areas of need rather than treating the entire face.

The best treatment option for resurfacing moderate-to-severe sun damaged skin utilizes the Carbon Dioxide laser. The laser seals tiny capillaries and lymph vessels, decreasing post treatment swelling. Additionally, the laser can be programmed to reach a predictable depth. The regenerating skin is smoother, more uniform in color, more elastic and thicker. Another added and very important benefit to laser resurfacing is the removal of pre-cancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis).

Laser resurfacing is not painful, but it will require a recovery period of ten days to two weeks, in which your participation is necessary. By the end of your second recovery week, hypo-allergenic make-up can be worn. Most people are comfortable returning to their daily social activities by two weeks. Following the immediate post operative period, your new skin will be thin and have a pinkish hue, however, over the next three months as it thickens your wrinkles will continue to diminish as will this color. To maintain the healthy benefits of the regenerated skin, patients should dedicate themselves to an extended skin care program. Sunscreen is mandatory in the postoperative period and probably a good habit to continue. Our certified estheticians, who are skin care specialists, will advise the best long-term treatment program for maintaining your new, healthy skin.

The best candidate for laser resurfacing is a physically healthy woman who is realistic in their expectations and interested in improving the appearance of facial wrinkles and sun-damaged skin. Most men are not ideal candidates for full face laser resurfacing. Some men are candidates for use of the laser on specific facial areas, such as just around the eyes. The procedure may be performed in the office or an outpatient surgical center. The resurfacing can take anywhere from a few minutes to one and a half hours to complete, depending on the size of the area treated. Local anesthesia combined with sedation is most often used, though more extensive resurfacing procedures may be performed with general anesthesia. The potential risks associated with laser resurfacing include the following: burns or other heat-related injuries, cold sores, infection, lightening or darkening of the skin, and scarring.
